NAME: Krystal Aranyani
PLATFORM & USERNAME: Insta – @krystalaranyani
CENSORSHIP: Account, Content Ban, Shadow Ban
What reason was given for your ban?
“Sexual exploitation” in my yoga images about spirituality, body love and empowerment, fully clothed.
Why do you think your post(s) was censored?
Conscious and empowering accounts are currently being censored.
This is deemed as sexual exploitation, although Porn Hub and similar accounts actually selling sex, are verified with millions of followers. The message is what is controversial, not the photos of the woman. If it doesn’t have an empowering message and supports the numbing of our consciousness, it is allowed. This is happening to so many conscious accounts.
Also, it’s been brought to my attention that the word “tantra” is flagged on Instagram, and I am a traditional tantra teacher. Tantra is an ancient, complex spiritual path that has nothing to do with sex, but the word has sadly been distorted in the West by teachers claiming it is sexual. I’ve attempted to contact Instagram many times regarding this with no response. I have left this in my bio because I want to share with others the true meaning of this path. I will continue to post my content and never change it to fit in their box.
Were you able to appeal and what was the response?
I have appealed every time (this happens frequently) and what they say is that my write up is controversial- always around self-empowerment and self/body love. I am a best selling author in the women’s empowerment realm. If you read my writings there is nothing related to selling or mentioning sex, only self-love and reminding others of their power and potential.
What effect has your experience of censorship had on you?
I have now lost 95% of my engagement in this past year.
I went from 8000+ like per photo, to only a few hundred these past months. My account isn’t discoverable in many countries. My business has been affected greatly and I have lost over half of my monthly income. I can’t launch a sustainable lingerie line that I had created and invested in because IG/FB will not allow me to post lingerie. Again this is even though there are countless accounts (promoting unhealthy sexual expression rather than empowerment) allowed to post the exact same images.
My followers tell me that they can’t search my name so there’s no way to find my account. Instagram was the only marketing I had previously so it hit me hard.
I receive weekly warnings that my account might be deleted, after years of putting energy daily into the write-ups and images. They say every account is treated the same yet when writing their department directly, my case is left on “not chosen for review”.
I’ve asked them to explain why 30+ accounts I’ve found with over 3 million followers that do sell sex can post much more explicit content than anything I post and I still don’t hear anything.
What’s one thing you want people to know about this topic?
For centuries women were made to believe that their sexuality, power and bodies were sinful. We have evolved from these times. Empowerment should not be controversial. Our bodies should not be seen only as sexual objects for sale, we are so much more than that.
These platforms aren’t censoring for safety, they are censoring to numb and to make money in their own pockets. We must begin evolving out of this mindset. It doesn’t mean it is wrong to sexualize a body you find attractive, but we can most definitely as a society stop projecting our own sexual suppression onto others and making them feel uncomfortable, and censoring them/sabotaging their livelihood as if they’ve done something wrong. Young children need to see others comfortable with their sexuality and bodies, not women with their legs spread in g-strings with a two-word write-up from a porn site. What is the true intention behind this all?
Our individual actions affect the collective so it begins with the healing within ourselves.
